The sky is falling!

The Sky is Falling! It really has been a crazy time recently! I was putting in some long hours on a project and got about 2 hours of sleep this afternoon after being up all night. I was awoken from my nap by my housemate, who had just spoken to our landlord because the ceiling above his bed collapsed thanks to a leak in the roof that went unnoticed until it was this bad because there is a drop ceiling in that room.

The landlord had been about to get in touch with us anyway to let us know that the downstairs neighbor, who has two dogs, has a major flea infestation going on. Luckily, in his nearly nine years of life, Kerby has never had fleas. Well, actually, he he has had one or two jump on him from other dogs, but I nipped it in the bud so fast that it never turned into a full-blown infestation.

Anyway, now I have to find somewhere for Kerby and I to hang out for at least six hours this Saturday while the whole building is sprayed with poison. Since I have a very low tolerance for heat and humidity, and no car to get to anywhere I’d want to hang out for that long, doing something outdoors is probably not an option.

Meanwhile, my poor roomie has a nasty mess to clean up and will have to put some plastic sheeting up in his room until things are fixed. I do have to say that we have a really good landlord. He came over immediately upon hearing about the ceiling and promised to have the roof fixed right away and to replace the damaged panel of the drop ceiling. He also offered us a $20/day discount on our rent until the problem is fixed. I think he felt a little guilty because he knew the roof was developing a problem but had not gotten around to fixing it before we moved in. As much as we keep talking about wanting to move to get out of this neighborhood and get a bigger apartment, neither of us wants to give up one of the few decent landlords either of us has ever had!

Speaking of the neighborhood, there was a big truck pulling a flatbed circling around for hours, occasionally blowing its air horn. On the flatbed was a striped tent with the sides rolled up, and two or three picnic tables in a row. The whole thing was surrounded by a single plastic rope covered with colorful triangular flags at waist level. A whole lot of presumably drunken people (despite all lack of food or drink on the tables) were shouting excitedly and whatnot. I have no idea what it was all about but they seemed to be having a lovely time. I did wonder why the truck was driving considerably faster than would seem safe instead of creeping along, though. I assume the whole thing was somehow related to the “7.7.7 Parade” (July 7th on 7th Street) held over the weekend by a community/arts group based out of a nearby café that is never open.
