This flowery world

To balance out all the complaining I’ve done about my neighborhood over the past seven months (I’ve intentionally refrained from posting about the inescapable ice cream truck music), I thought I’d list a few of the positive things about being here (and toss in some relevant haiku as well):
- The flowering tree in the front yard that scattered a thick layer of pink petals across the entrance brickwork like sweet scented snow for a couple of weeks.
- The cool yellow, repurposed metal sculpture in the front yard.
- The white picket fence and gate around the front yard that provides a slight buffer zone from the street and gives Kerby a place to run around safely under supervision.
- The downstairs neighbor’s two dogs that Kerby gets to socialize with occasionally.
- A fair share of refreshing breezes because we’re near the top of the hill; it can be quite pleasant to sit on the front porch and listen to the neighbor’s windchimes.
- The best landlord I’ve ever rented from, which only seems fair after the last one; a former roommate and I ended up in court with him (and won).
- The neat old houses a block or two up the hill and the big park a block and a half away.
- The old stone church (now a youth center) across the street that provides a pleasant view from my bedroom windows.
- Our big kitchen that I haven’t seen any cockroaches in it, just one visit from some ants who lost interest and left once we took the pizza box out to the trash.
